When I say "awesomeness", I mean "awesomeness". Where do we begin?? Our offense is blooming like a tiger lily in the hot summer sun. These boys are finally getting into their groove and it is showing in the stats:

1) Steele Howard: (who has been nursing an injury) 60 net yards rushing
2) Nathan Skidmore: 832 net yards rushing
3) Austin Trent: 346 net yards rushing
4) Devon Ditto: (new and a standout) 96 net yards rushing
Receiving
1) Nathan Skidmore: 24 yards gained
2)Drew Ginter: 31 yards
3) Dionte Strange: 99 yards
4 Austin Trent: 225 yards

What does that add up to? Total domination in district play! Plus, it is super fun to watch!
the Pirates are 2-0 in district play and Estill County is on the chopping block next!!!

MAGOFFIN COUNTY HORNETS v. POWELL COUNTY PIRATES
 
Eastern Kentucky sports media leader, BLUEGRASS SPORTS NATION has chosen at its game of the week for Friday, September 22nd  as the Magoffin County at Powell County matchup.  This is the Class 3A District 7 opener for each team.  The Magoffin County Hornets are led by Head Coach Justin Combs in his sophomore campaign, and they will travel to Stanton to take on the Powell County Pirates led by Head Coach Brandon Brewer.   Bluegrass Sports Nation will have pregame interviews each of the Head Coaches, quarterly tweets with score updates, and a photo gallery of the game by BSN photographer Brendon Miller to relive all the action.  To see the coverage, you should Like the BSN Facebook Page at www.facebook/bluegrasssportsnation, follow along on Twitter @BGSportsNation, and view the webpage at www.bluegrasssportsnation.com.  Kickoff is set for 7:30.  The game will also be carried live on the airwaves on WSKV 104.9, who broadcast the Pirate games. Well...Once again, the outcome wasn't exactly what we were hoping for (41-39), BUT did you SEE the game??!!! Did you listen to the game?? It was an intense nail biter that ended with Powell behind WC by only 2 pts and 40 seconds left on the clock.

Last week Coach Brewer promised our listening audience 2 things: EXECUTION and EFFORT. Well, the Pirates delivered. 

The WC Comets won the toss and elected to give the Pirates the first shot at scoring. They had to punt on their first drive, but the Pirates' defense held them and they had to punt back to us and thus began the back and forth that continued until time ran out on the clock.

Nathan Skidmore shone as the swashbuckling captain of the Pirate ship against the Comets. Nate had 29 rushes for 229 yards and 5 touchdowns. Yep, you read that right folks, 5 touchdowns. 

Ryan Vanover had 11 rushes for 154 yards. He had 180 yards of total offense and 2 catches for 27 yards.

Austin Trent had 6 rushes for 86 yards and 1 touchdown.

Our leading tacklers were Jon Brooks with 7 tackles and Nate Skidmore with 8! 

To say this game was fun to watch is an understatement. We have lots to look forward to in the future!

Well...it didn't quite start out the way I'm sure the Pirates would have wanted it to, but they show promise. First of all, let's start out by discussing some of the strengths of our opponent:

Since 2011, Powell has only played Garrard 5x, including last Friday's game. In every match-up, Garrard has defeated Powell. The margin of defeat has been almost exactly the same: each time these opponents have met-almost 30 points. Coach Jerry Perry has been  the head coach of Garrard County for the past 11 years.

Now, what happened and why was the final score 38-0?

Powell has a history of starting out of the gate slow.  Coach Brewer's first year, the Pirates began their season by losing to Casey County 13-36, West Carter 13-38, and Lawrence 0-37. I can tell you, as the coach's wife, it was more than an abysmal beginning. But, Coach Brewer didn't let that keep him from motivating his team, and after that, they started winning, and they kept winning, until the 2nd round of the regional semi-finals. It ended up being a phenomenal season. That year, the Pirates finished by tying for the most wins ever in the history of the program. It was the first time the Pirates had ever hosted a district championship on their home field.

Last year, the Pirates had a major rebuilding year and finished the season with a record of 4-7.

So, what can we expect to see next week against West Carter? A better showing, I'm convinced. Even though the score didn't quite reflect the effort the Pirates gave, I can assure you, this team has more grit and more toughness than last year's.  On Friday night, the Pirates were struggling to score and the Garrard county defense was doing a great job of putting up a wall and daring the Pirates to break through. With that being said, our boys showed a resolve this year that was not present during the 2016 season.

And that leads me to my next point...Nate Skidmore is by all means a weapon for the Pirates. He has proven over and over again that he can deliver and that he is "your go-to guy" in a tough spot. The hall of fame committee voted Skidmore as the MVP of Friday night's game and he certainly earned it.  

BUT, on Friday, one player stood out to me: Deionte Strange. Strange, is the Safety and Wide Receiver for the Pirates. He more than earned his Pirate Patch on Friday night. Strange is roughly 5' 6" and weighs around 135 lbs, but he played with the voracity and aggressiveness of a 6' 5" 250 lb linebacker. Garrard county's offense spent a lot of time on the field last week, and Strange was all over the field making huge tackle after huge tackle. Watching him take down guys twice his size, tells me everything I need to know about this kid, and this team!
