On Saturday Powell hosted the Leslie County Lady Eagles. Neither team was shooting the lights out, Powell hit just 39 percent from the floor (22-56) compared to Leslie’s chilly 28 percent (19-67). But rebounds seemed to help Leslie, leading Powell in that category 44-30.
Powell stayed close once again in the first half, trailing 31-25 at the intermission. Clearly within striking distance, Powell had hoped to come out on fire in the second half. But another cold quarter, as the Lady Pirates were outscored 16-8 in the third frame, became a hill too big to climb. Powell did make it respectable and stayed in the game throughout. They went on an impressive 13-0 run to open the fourth quarter and make it a 47-46 game with 3:41 to play. But Leslie regrouped and ended the game on an 18-10 run. Just enough to hold their lead and then some, winning the game 65-56. Powell was led by Macey Howell with 25 points, while teammate Bree Bush tossed in nine points, grabbed eight boards and dished out seven assists. Kanzas Stephens added eight, Presley Hall scored six, Mikyra Caudill had five, Lori Faulkner chipped in two and Kiera Anderson hit a free throw. Powell fell to 4-12 on the season. They will host Owsley County this Friday in another district showdown. The Lady Pirates will travel to Harrison County on Jan. 29 and return home for a district rematch on Jan. 31. JC
