The Lady Pirates have finished a rough season and are looking forward to the district tournament. But before they could even think about that, they had two games they had to play. They took apart Lee County, but fell hard to Wolfe County to end the regular season.
Powell hosted Lee County last Wednesday and the Lady Kats had no real chance. The young visitors were held to just five points in the first quarter and Powell grabbed a huge 26-7 halftime lead. The Lady Pirates had 11 players in the scoring column and held Lee to single digits in each quarter. Powell’s biggest frame was the third. The Lady Pirates outscored Lee 23-5 in the period. The fourth quarter was played with a lot of subs and a running clock. Powell won easily 59-19 and locked in the number two seed for the district tournament. Powell was led by Macey Howell with 16 points and Mikyra Caudill with 10. Bree Bush scored seven points and dished out five assists, while Cloe Grater scored five points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kanzas Stephens also scored five pints, Kenna Neal and Presley Hall each scored four points and Kiera Anderson added three points. Carly Rogers scored two, Kaelyn Neal scored two and Cheyenne Gearheart added a free throw. On Friday the Lady Pirate went to Campton to play the Wolfe County Lady Wolves. The Lady Wolves are considered one of the best in the 14th Region and it showed. Powell was on he other end of the spectrum in this contest. Wolfe opened up taking a 25-10 lead and never looked back. The Lady Pirates could not catch up as Wolfe pushed out to 45-18 halftime lead. The home team then cruised to an easy 64-24 victory. Powell was led by Mikyra Caudill with 10 points and Macey Howell with six points. Kenna Neal, Presley Hall, Kanzas Stephens and Carly Rogers each score two points in the game. Powell finished the regular season with an 8-16 record. They will host the 56th District tournament this week. The Lady Pirates will play Estill County in the first round on Monday (Feb. 24) in game two. Owsley and Lee open the tournament on the same night. Action begins at 6 p.m.
