The Lady Pirates took to the road again this past Monday to play the Menifee CountyLady Wildcats. Despite a good start and a couple of runs, Powell came up a little short in Frenchburg. Menifee won a close one, 65-58.
The two teams opened up pretty even, but the home team took a small leave after one quarter of play, 20-13. Menifee then went on a 13-0 run to grab a sizable advantage at 33-13, with just under half of the quarter to play. Powell then went on a run as well to add some spark to the contest. By time the halftime horn sounded, Powell matched Menifee’s scoring output in the quarter. But Menifee held a 37-30 lead.
Both teams battled in the second half, as each aqua went on scoring runs. The Lady Pirates mounted comeback, after comeback. But they could not seem to overcome the Lady Wildcats attack. When the final buzzer went off, Menifee held on for a 65-58 win. The seven point advantage seemed to have stayed place the entire game.
Powell was led by Macie Howell with 22 points and eight boards. Bree Bush tossed 19 points and dished out five assists. Mikyra Caudill scored seven points, Kanzas Stephens chipped in six, while Cloe Grater and Hannah Crabtree added two points.
Powell fell to 3-9 on the season.
Powell was set to play Lexington Christian on Jan. 9. They follow that with two straight district games on the road. The Lady Pirates travel to Owsley County on Jan. 14 and Estill County on Jan. 17.
