The Powell County Lady Pirates have never been shy about playing in a holiday tournament, so this year was no exception. Powell sailed into Bourbon County for the BSN Holiday Classic two days after Christmas to take on the host team, the Bourbon Lady Colonels. Despite a strong opening, an 18-0 run in the second quarter by their hosts, Powell fell to Bourbon 58-46.
The two teams opened up battling back-and-forth, but the Lady Colonels held a slight 14-10 lead after the first quarter. Bourbon pushed the lead out to three early in the second frame. But the Lady Pirates made little run. Mikyra Caudill hit two free throws to make it 18-17 with 6:07 to play in the first half. Bourbon then went on an 18-0 run to close out the half and lead 36-17 at the intermission. Powell did manage to mount a strong showing in the third frame to make it a 44-30 game. The Lady Pirates did out score their hosts by two in the final quarter. But the Lady Colonels held on for 58-46 win. Powell stayed close in all statistical categories with Bourbon. However, the Lady Pirates were cold from three point range, hitting only one of 11 attempts for a freezing nine percent. Powell also had 26 turnovers, which was nine more than Bourbon. The Lady Pirates were led by Macey Howell, back from an injury, who scored 20 points and picked up 15 rebounds. Bree Bush and Caudill each added seven points. Kanzas Stephens chipped in six points, while Cloe Grater and Kenna Neal each added three points. Powell fell to 2-6, with two more tournament games to go. JC
