Anytime two district rivals like Powell and Estill meet up, even if the home courts had to be changed, you can just about bet the game can become a classic. The Lady Pirates-Lady Engineer game last Friday in Stanton lived up to that hype. Like the ebb and flow of the tide, the lead swung back-and-forth, but a late surge by the Lady Pirates helped Powell earn a 52-46 victory.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on to an 11-6 lead after one quarter. The second quarter saw Estill go on a 17-2 run to grab a 23-13 advantage. Both teams put on a furious show of one-upmanship.
Estill pushed their lead out to 27-17 with the running out in the half. But Kiera Anderson, who was enjoying her birthday, had the best play of the first half. As time was running out Anderson nailed a 27 foot three pointer at the buzzer. Estill led at the intermission, 27-20.
The third quarter was once again a see-saw battle. Both teams took advantage of some rushed shots and turnovers from the other squad. The two rivals made it clear that the game would go down to the wire, as Powell grabbed a 37-33 lead at the end of the quarter.
The final frame was an old fashioned barn burner. Estill fought back, as Powell put on a solid defense. With just 2:25 to play in the game Estill’s Haley Angel hit a layup to give the Lady Engineers a 46-45 lead. It would be the visitors last lead.
Powell’s Mikyra Caudill nailed a quick layup and Bree Bush popped a trey to give the Lady Pirates control. Caudill hit two free throws to round out the scoring. The Lady Pirates prevailed, 52-46.
Bush had a career night, scoring 21 points, including three treys. Caudill tossed in 16 and five assists. Macey Howell, coming off an all-tournament team performance at Bourbon County, scored eight points and grabbed 12 boards. Anderson added three points, Cloe Grater and Kenna Neal each added a deuce to the win.
Powell improved to 3-8 on the season. They will host Lexington Christian on Thursday, before traveling to Owsley County on Tuesday for another boys/girls district doubleheader.
