The Powell County Lady Pirates have had a rough start to the new season. But last Monday they finally picked up their first win. Powell trailed to Buckhorn and in a very low scoring game, the sailed away from the Lady Wildcats with a 38-35 victory. Powell opened the game scoring the first seven points before their hosts got on the scoreboard. By the time the first quarter ended the Lady Pirates held a 12-6 lead. The second quarter was filled with a flurry of action as both teams offenses picked up the pace. The Lady Pirates outlasted the Buckhorn push and led 26-18 at the break. The third quarter was once again a slow paced affair as neither team was able to score double figures in the quarter. Powell’s lead was still close, 31-24. The final frame saw a Buckhorn team trying to make a comeback and they even outscored Powell 11-7. But the Lady Pirates were able to hang on to the lead and pick up the 38-35 win. Powell was out rebounded by Buckhorn 39-28. But the Lady Pirates out shot the Lady Wildcats hitting 32 percent of their shots (14-41) compared to 24 percent (12-49). Both teams were near equal a the charity stripe as Powell hit 10-18 for 56 percent and Buckhorn connected on 11-22 for 50 percent. But the Lady Pirates nailed 2-8 three point attempts, while Buckhorn missed all three of their attempts. Powell was led by Bree Bush with 12 points, as she was the only Lady Pirate in double figures. Cloe Grater tossed in nine points and grabbed nine rebounds, Kanzas Stephens scored eight points, while Kaelyn Neal added five. Kenna Neal and Mikyra Caudill each score two points in the win. On Thursday Powell hosted Morgan County. The Lady Pirates have been showing some improvement and played hard in the game, but when the final buzzer sounded they dropped a heart breaker, 57-54. Powell trailed 34-21 at the half and saw the Lady Pirates start to make a comeback. As the final frame started Morgan led, 44-35. With 3:11 to play Morgan led 54-41, but Powell went on a spree. The Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Cougars 13-3, but they fell a little short. Morgan won 57-54. Powell, who now has a 1-4 record, was led by eighth grader Mihyra Caudill and Bree Bush. each with 14 points apiece. Kenna Neal tossed in 10 points and picked up nine boards. Cloe Grater chipped in eight points and eight rebounds, Kaelyn Neal scored four, Kanzas Stephens had three and Ameila Trent added a free throw.
