Finally the flu and weather has apparently subsided and roundball is active again. The Lady Pirates have seen so many games just slip away, but with each one they have learned a little bit more about themselves. Hopefully that will all pay off in couple of weeks when the postseason come knocking.
Meanwhile, the Powell girls took on Knott Central last Saturday. The Lady Pirates played tough and with a purpose. But the Lady Patriots put together a strong fourth quarter and outlasted Powell, 70-60. The Lady Pirates jumped out to an 11-3 lead early, but the Lady Patriots then went on an 8-0 run to tie the game. Powell picked up the pace to hold a 17-16 lead after one quarter of play. Knott Central seemed to turn the script around in the second quarter, out lasting Powell by a bucket to hold a slim 34-33 halftime lead. The two teams played dead even in the third quarter, as the visitors held a 49-48 lead entering the final frame. Powell jumped out to a 54-49 early on, but then the Lady Patriots got hot and made a final push. Powell kept pace with them for most of the quarter, but once they fell behind they only got to within three in the minutes. Knott Central went on to win, 70-60. The Lady Pirates actually out shot Knott Central from the field (53 percent to 39 percent) and out rebounded them (29-28). But the Lady Pirates committed 18 turnovers to the Lady Patriots eight, which aided in the visitors victory. Powell was led Macey Howell with 29 points. Mikyra Caudill tossed in 19 points. four assists and nine rebounds. Kiera Anderson scored four points and Kanzas Stephens added three points. Bree Bush and Presley Hall each added two points and Cloe Grater chipped in a charity toss. Powell fell to 4-15 on the season.
