Powell County Lady Pirates dropped their first game of the 2019-20 basketball season to the Madison Southern Lady Eagles 74-39.
The Lady Pirates struggled during their season road opener and were led in scoring by Junior Macey Howell with 11 points. Junior point guard Brianna Bush chipped in 10 points. The Lady Pirates struggled offensively, only shooting 39% from the field making just 14 of 36 shots. The Lady Pirates didn't attempt many three-point shots, but made two of three from 75%. At the free-throw line Powell County hit 75% going 9 of 12. Madison Southern controlled the boards as they out rebounded the Lady Pirates 37-12. Madison Southern was led in scoring by Aleigh Richardson and Samantha Cornelison each with 20 points. Richardson was 8 of 9 in field goals and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. Cornelison made most of her points from beyond the three point line connecting on 4 of 7 from deep range. She was also 8 of 8 from the free throw line. Kanzas Stevens contributed 8 points for the Lady Pirates, along with Mikyra Caudill tossing in 6 points. Up next for the Lady Pirates is another road test as they head to Lexington to face off against Bryan Station on Thursday, Dec. 5. -Ken Simon
